  • A Shitty Day

We know how to enjoy ourselves! Our neighbour kindly allowed us the contents of his goat shed if we cleaned it out, and as you can never have enough goat shit, it was on with the wellies and in we went.                           And more »

  • Training of Permaculture Teachers Course

I’m really excited to announce this course, a first for Casalinho. We’ll be offering a five day training aimed at those who would like to teach permaculture, facilitated by Peter Cow. It’s suitable for beginner or experienced permaculture teachers, the only requirement being that participants have previously taken a PDC. Full details here.

  • Permaculture Design Courses 2016

Will you join us this summer? We’re pleased to be offering two opportunities to join us for a PDC here at Casalinho this year. Both courses are taught by Josh Gomez, and fully certified by the UK Permaculture Association. For all the details, click here.

  • A Dog Poo Wormery

We’ve currently got nine dogs. Nine dogs produce a lot of poo, and some of it needs to be collected up and disposing of. We’ve tried various ways of composting it in the past, none of which were entirely satisfactory. This time we’re asking our composting worms to lend a hand, putting together a vermicomposting more »

  • Preserving an Abundant Harvest

As summer draws to a close we’ve a huge abundance of foods coming out of the garden.  Nothing will be allowed to go to waste. As I look around me, these are just a handful of examples happening right now.  Whilst we use a wide range of techniques to preserve our bounty, we’re making the more »

  • Learning about Bees at The Hive

Jeroen took a course on beekeeping organised by the local beekeepers co-operative some time ago, when we originally purchased our hives. I’ve never had any training in beekeeping though, so I was thrilled when The Hive offered another Introduction to Beekeeping Workshop. The Hive are a local cultural co-operative focussing on sustainable education. Apiculturist more »

  • In the Kitchen: Plantain & Kefir Bites

No, I’m not talking about the plantain that looks like a sort of banana, but Plantago major, the ribbed leafed plant which people who don’t know better call a weed. We’ve loads of it growing at Casalinho and in this ‘hungry gap’ time of year when last year’s stored vegetables are running short and this more »

  • Ram Pump Workshop

A Ram Pump is a hydraulic pump which allows you to raise water from one point to another without using an outside power source. We’re astonished that they aren’t more widely known as you can make one at home. All you need is a water drop and cheap parts you’ll find in the plumbing aisle of more »

So our summer schedule of courses is now live, and we’re taking bookings. This year we’re offering a choice of three Permaculture Design Courses, all certified by the UK Permaculture Association and taught by Josh Gomez. They’re differing lengths, so there should be one to suit everyone. This year, for the first time and at more »

  • Tree Planting Project – Mulberries and Walnuts

Planting new trees has always been a significant part of our plan for Casalinho. Trees to enhance and repair our environment, to feed us, our animals and our soils. Almost all the fruit trees on this property were destroyed before we knew it, but we’re told that the lower portion of the property alone was more »
