  • Scout Camp 2016 – New Parking Space & Learning to Render

We’ve enjoyed hosting a Belgian Scout Group for their annual camp. As one of their activities they’ve built a brilliant new parking area here, already in use as we now have a PDC group on site. Jeroen has also been teaching the Scouts how to render, and they’ve been practicing on one of the exterior more »

  • Training of Permaculture Teachers Course

I’m really excited to announce this course, a first for Casalinho. We’ll be offering a five day training aimed at those who would like to teach permaculture, facilitated by Peter Cow. It’s suitable for beginner or experienced permaculture teachers, the only requirement being that participants have previously taken a PDC. Full details here.

  • Book up for a Summer Permaculture Design Course PDC

So our summer schedule of courses is now live, and we’re taking bookings. This year we’re offering a choice of three Permaculture Design Courses, all certified by the UK Permaculture Association and taught by Josh Gomez. They’re differing lengths, so there should be one to suit everyone. This year, for the first time and at more »

Plans are meant to be adapted huh? Our Permaculture Design Course this summer with Silvia Floresta has had to be rescheduled. • New Summer Courses

After the terrific feedback we received following June’s Permaculture Design Course with New School Permaculture, we’re excited to invite Helder Valente back next month for a couple of brand new courses. One of the areas of Casalinho that we need to put more work into is our forest garden. I’m sure we’re not alone in more »

  • Straw Bale Building course

We were recently asked why our new communal area / training room is built using conventional building techniques. If I’m honest it’s simply because it was quick and easy, the materials were easily available and will fit in with the existing house. But Jeroen is very excited to be soon attending a Straw Bale Building more »

  • Introducing Oficinas da TerraCrua

Oficinas da TerraCrua (literal translation = Workshops of Raw Earth) is a local organisation offering workshops in a range of sustainable building techniques such as Adobe, cob, cordwood and straw bale. Nuno taught the New Build session on our recent Permaculture Design Course, which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy. Although workshops are taught in Portuguese, more »

  • Thermal Mass Rocket Stove Workshop

We’ve just come back from a Thermal Mass Rocket Stove workshop over at Corga da Periera, where Jeroen was helping to build a rocket stove in their tipi. The flue from the stove passes  through a cob bench (the thermal mass) as it exits, so the heat of combustion is retained and can be utilised, more »

  • SLU update – It’s all over

It’s over. The focus of my life for the past six weeks, the Sustainable Land Use course, has finished. I’m not sure whether I should be whooping with delight or weeping that it’s all over. Certainly I’m happy to have my Permaculture Design Certificate in my hand and a head full of ideas. But I’m also more »
