Carqueja (Genista tridentata) is a low growing plant which covers the hillside with it’s yellow blooms at this time of year. The flowers, harvested now and carefully dried, can be used throughout the year as a tea or an addition to rice.
Our neighbours grant it incredible medicinal powers, from a cure for colds and flu to a boost to the heart and the nerves and even a help if slimming. But we think it simply makes an excellent everyday tea, which keeps me harvesting even when it’s a slow process.
I sometimes make a syrup from it too, similar in style and method to elderflower cordial. It’s said to have a coconut flavour, but I have to say I don’t see it myself! It’s good though. Experiment and try it with oranges.
