What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a sustainable design system that provides for human needs while having positive effects on the surrounding environment.

It is based on the ethics of earth care, people care and fair share, and provides practical solutions to the global crises we are currently facing.

Permaculture is for EVERYONE, regardless of their education, background, or previous experience.

Permaculture is NOT just about trees, or just about gardening! You don't need loads of land to practice it and it's a design method that can be applied to all social systems.

Save me from the Tyranny of Goats!

In this part of the world every village, large and small, has it’s annual festa. It’s an excuse for some music, perhaps some dancing, certainly some drinking, and an opportunity for the community to celebrate together. The festa of Aradas, organised by the Comissão de Melhoramentos de Aradas, will be held this year on the 30th and 31st July.

The highlight of this year’s event is called ‘A Vaca Cagou, Você Ganhou’. Google charmingly translates that as ‘Cow Shit, You Won’. I expect you get the picture? You buy a lottery ticket, a series of numbers are laid out, and the lucky person who’s number the cow chooses to shit on gets to to take it home.

So who wants a go? We’re not sure how much a ticket costs yet, but it’s surely a small price to pay for a chance to save me from the tyranny of goats. Horny broke loose again this morning and decimated another vine before we could corner her. If we had a cow we could dispense with the goats altogether and I could get my life back. Just imagine …

Paypal me a few euros (info@casalinho.com) and we’ll put it towards an extra ticket and an extra chance, and benefit our local community into the bargain.

Oh, and cross your fingers 🙂

    Did you won the cow???

Yesterday we went to the zoo and I look to the rino, hipo and elefant fance and giant manure and I said: “I need just one day of there manure to compost all the garden…”

Sadly we didn’t. It was won by a lady from Pampilhosa so I expect it’s in her freezer by now 🙁

Maybe you should ask at the zoo. They must get rid of it somehow ….
