  • Weak Piglet

This sweet little girl, one of our Vietnamese Pot Belly Piglets, is very weak today. We’re wondering if Mum’s milk has dried up as a reaction to the stress of transport. We’re topping her up with goat’s milk as an emergency measure. Please wish her well.

  • Vietnamese Pot Belly Pigs

New arrivals to the farm yesterday, a lovely little family of Vietnamese pot belly pigs. Two of the the sweetest piglets you ever saw, who sleep on top of Mum and Dad in a big snoring heap! More photos to come when they get to trust me a little more!

  • Rendering Lard

I finally got around to jarring up the lard which we’d carefully rendered from our pig fat today. When processing the meat, any scraps of white fat were set aside. Heated very very gently with a scrap of water to set them off and prevent burning, these were melted down to make lard. Today I more »

  • Milk Thistle

Related to the daisy and ragweed family, the milk thistle is native to our area and a really attractive volunteer which pops up whenever we’re not looking. When I do get to pulling it up (tough gloves required!) the pigs love it.

Each of these has a tuber underground which once dug up is absolutely delicious. You’ll know how passionate I am about more »

Those who’ve spoken to me recently will know how excited I’ve been! The cause of all my excitement comes courtesy of Mrs Pig who has become a proud new mummy pig with the arrival of four piglets. A small litter isn’t unusual for a first time mum, and she’s doing a grand job with them more »

  • Seasonal decor?

Seasonal decor, Casalinho style. Home made chorizo and morcela dry curing above the stove. It’s been a busy few weeks, with the killing and processing of our first home grown pig and the completion of the olive harvest keeping us busy. More on what we’ve been up to in due course, but in the meantime more »

  • Scout Camp 2016 – Milking the Goats & Feeding the Pigs

One of my favourite activities with our annual Scout camp is teaching the Scouts to milk the goats. This year we’ve also had the pigs so the braver Scouts were hand feeding them. All fingers still intact 🙂 Lots of photos, proof for the Scout’s parents that they really were on a farm and not more »

  • Bye Babies

We’ve bid a fond farewell to this year’s goat kids this week. Lovely though goats are, I was finding that I had too many to manage alone when it came to walking them. So the kids, along with some of the adults, have been rehomed elsewhere and I’ll be concentrating on a smaller group for more »
